Content! My favorite thing
In this linked article, Joe Pulizzi of Content Marketing Institute shares 12 essential roles for content marketing. 12 Roles Essential to the Future of Content Marketing
Special thanks to Carl Dameron of Dameron Communications for passing this on! I would like to add that Pen Porter may, in fact, be a brand new breed of content marketer. While my industry is public relations, for me it's all about creating quality content to help grow interest in my clients' businesses. Of course, when a journalist turned freelance writer turned public relations specialist opens her own public relations and marketing agency, content is king! Well, Queen in my case. Content is even my "Word of the Year" for 2013. It has been since January 1, four months before Pen Porter launched.
Pen Porter existed as a dream for almost 10 years before it became real. That is, a dream that sometimes resulted in paying freelance gigs payable to Ellen Porter. Most of those freelance gigs, even as late as 2012, were for creating content. There were stories sold to freelance magazines years ago, stories sold to freelance magazines with websites a few years ago, and stories sold to an online-only publication in 2011 and 2012. One of Pen Porter's current clients may be more well served if I submit actual stories to magazines instead of press releases.
Since it is not a true journalist's intention to bring favorable attention (or unfavorable attention) to a source for the story, a public relations agency creating freelance magazine articles crosses a line between public relations and journalism. But it's a line that has already been crossed. One of my published magazine works, though I was not paid with anyting more than a byline, was submitted to the magazine as a press release. I have also seen my content - intended for use as a press release- used word for word in the DAILY newspaper, once with a byline. It was par for the course when I submitted content to weekly newspapers and a local news website.
Quality content is quality content whether a magazine pays me for it, or a business pays me for it. And quality content is what I will deliver to southern Cailfornia.
